My Favourite Wedding Venues in North Yorkshire (And Why I Love Them)
Wedding venue hunting in North Yorkshire? Here are six of my favourite venues, from Great Ayton to the coast near Ravenscar, and exactly why I love them.
WEDDINGS
If you're deep in the venue-hunting stage of planning right now, I feel for you. You've probably got fifteen tabs open, three Pinterest boards, and a spreadsheet that's somehow made the decision making harder rather than easier. Choosing where you'll say “I do” is one of the biggest decisions of the whole planning process, and it's easy to feel like you need to see every barn, hall and marquee in Yorkshire before you can trust your gut.
I often get asked about my favourite venues so I thought I'd share with you six venues across North Yorkshire that I genuinely love, not because a directory told me to, but because I've seen what they do for a ceremony, and for the couples who choose them.
Howard Court, Great Ayton
Howard Court sits just outside Great Ayton, with views rolling out across the fields to Roseberry Topping, and it's one of those places that makes you exhale the second you arrive. It's run by Caroline and Jules, a mother-and-daughter team whose family has called this place home for decades, and that ownership shows in every detail. It feels like being welcomed into someone's actual home, because you are.
The venue is built around two beautifully restored barns set across 22 acres of pasture and woodland, and one of them has been turned into a proper ceremony room, small and intimate, exactly the kind of space where a room full of people can hear a couple's actual story rather than getting lost in a cavernous hall. If the weather's on your side, there's an outdoor courtyard ceremony option too, so you're never locked into one plan.
What I love most is the pace. Howard Court only takes one wedding booking per day so you get the place, entirely to yourselves.
Whinstone View, Great Ayton
Whinstone View is also just outside Great Ayton, tucked into woodland with Roseberry Topping as a backdrop, and it's a venue I know particularly well. I'm actually a preferred supplier there and it’s somewhere I regularly go to eat as the food is just so good!.
The barn itself is stunning, vaulted timber ceilings, huge glass frontage, string lights overhead, and enough room for anything from a cosy gathering up to around 120 guests. If you'd rather say your vows outdoors, that's an option too.
The staff are some of the friendliest I've worked with anywhere, and the food genuinely is second to none. There's also a proper lawn area, big enough for giant Jenga, croquet, whatever keeps your guests entertained between the ceremony and the party starting. And for anyone staying over, the log cabins make the whole weekend feel like a proper retreat rather than just a day out.
Rushpool Hall, Saltburn
Rushpool Hall near Saltburn is the one that looks like it's walked straight out of a fairy tale, an honest-to-goodness Victorian Gothic manor house with turrets, ornate stonework and that unmistakable old-world grandeur the moment you drive up. Inside, the decor is just as beautiful, all high ceilings and a grand staircase, without feeling stuffy.
It holds up to around 110 guests for the day, and ceremonies can take place in the main hall or outdoors in the grounds, with sea views stretching out on a clear day. And because you're only a few minutes from Saltburn itself, one of England's loveliest seaside towns, it's an easy add-on for photos on the pier or down on the sand.
Danby Castle Barn
Danby Castle Barn is the one I send people to when I want the drive itself to be part of the experience. It sits right in the heart of the North York Moors, and the road there, twisting through the heather and the hills, is genuinely one of the most beautiful in Yorkshire before you've even arrived.
The venue is built around the ruins of a 14th century castle, which gives you some of the most striking wedding photographs. There's real flexibility in how you use the space too. There's a small, intimate room with the feel of an old chapel, a larger, more historic room full of character, and a big, modern barn with wooden beams and fairy lights. If you'd rather say your vows outdoors, you can, looking straight out across the moors.
The team there are some of the most accommodating I've come across, genuinely can't do enough for you, and somehow the whole place manages to feel both grand and completely unpretentious at the same time.
Hackness Grange, near Scarborough
Hackness Grange is a bit further out, tucked into the countryside near Scarborough on the edge of Dalby Forest, and it's stunning from the moment you turn down the drive. It's a Georgian manor house set in seventeen acres with its own lake, and the ceremony space is reached by walking across a bridge over the water to a private island. There's something about that walk, just before you say your vows, that I don't think any other venue on this list quite matches.
The outdoor ceremony area is a proper pavilion, and here's the clever bit: the sides pull down if the weather turns, so you get the feel of an outdoor ceremony, the views, the light, the air, without gambling on a Yorkshire forecast. It's one of very few venues locally licensed to hold outdoor ceremonies all year round, which tells you everything about how well they've thought this through.
Inside, it's just as beautiful, all traditional Georgian elegance with beautifully decorated rooms and views out over the grounds and lake. And, like every venue on this list, the staff are genuinely lovely, the kind who want your day to be the very best it can possibly be, not just run to a schedule.
Grand Villa Heights, Ravenscar
Grand Villa Heights sits high on the cliffs near Ravenscar, six hundred feet above Robin Hood's Bay, and it's the venue on this list with the most dramatic view, full stop. You're looking straight down over the water, the whole coastline stretched out below you, and it genuinely stops people in their tracks the first time they see it.
The chapel there has to be one of the most striking ceremony spaces I've come across. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors slide right back so the room opens straight onto an outdoor stage, meaning you can say your vows with that view as your actual backdrop and if you'd rather be fully outdoors from the start, the gardens give you the same coastal views.
Inside, everything's immaculately done, properly stylish and the staff match the setting, warm, attentive, the kind who make you feel completely looked after from the moment you arrive. It's a bit further afield than some of the others on this list, but for a couple who want the sea and the sky to do a lot of the talking, I don't think there's anywhere else in North Yorkshire quite like it.
Finding the right wedding venue in North Yorkshire isn't really the hard part
The thing I always tell couples who are torn between two or three venues on this list. The venue sets the scene, but it isn't what your guests will actually remember. I've stood in barns, halls, castles and courtyards, and the ceremony that leaves a room in tears, or in stitches, has almost nothing to do with the building it's happening in. It's the story. It's the two of you, and words that only make sense for you.
So my honest advice? Pick the venue that feels right in your gut, the one where you can already picture your people gathered. Then put just as much thought into what actually happens once everyone's sat down. A ceremony shouldn't be predictable. It should be unforgettable, wherever you choose to say it.
